Gordonian's Pay the Price for Slack Play
By Ryan Morrice
Gordonian RFC 39 v Murrayfield Wanderers RFC 48
A strong breeze was blowing at Countesswells as Murrayfield Wanderers RFC visited the North East in a repeat of last season’s national shield semi-final.
The match started brightly with Greame Crawford kicking two penalties to Murrayfield Wanderer’s one. Against the run of play, Murrayfield turned the ball over after some slack Gordonian play, running half the length of the pitch to score and convert. This spurred the Gordonian forwards in to action After a few minutes of pressure Will Vernon dived over for the home side, Crawford once again add the extras from the tee. The Gordonian forwards kept the pressure on the away team, this time it was scrum half Mickael Guardia going over for the score with Crawford hitting another two points. From the resulting kick-off Murrayfield Wanderers managed to get possession of the ball, after several phases the Murrayfield tight-head prop went over for his first try of the day.
The first ten minutes of the second half will be a period to forget for the home side. Murrayfield Wanderers capitalised on some, unbelievably, slack play to score two tries and a conversion. Waking from their slumber, the home side burst in to action, leading from the front Tom Williams went over for an unconverted score. With both sides determined not to defend with any sort of commitment, Murrayfield Wanderers added another converted try. Up step the Gordonian forwards with Sam Cooper scoring and Crawford’s trusty boot adding the conversion. The play swung back in Murrayfield’s favour and their tight-head prop crashed over for his second try of the day, followed by another conversion from the Murrayfield captain. Tom Williams once again rose to the challenge and scored for the home side, Crawford slotted another two points.
Then disaster struck, a Gordonian knock on just on the edge of the 22 undid the home side, instead of killing the ball it got hacked straight into the hands of the visitors, some slick hands saw them beat the scrambling defence and score another converted try. From the kick off Gordonian’s pushed to get another score, and a second bonus point, but Murrayfield held firm to see the game out.
