Gordonians Win in the Rain
Haddington RFC 0 v Gordonian RFC 16
On an overcast Saturday, Gordonian RFC travelled to Haddington RFC. Coming off two bonus point victories the men from the north east knew they would be in for a sterner test.
With kick off fast approaching the heavens opened and the down poor ensured the tactics of the day would be more attritional than usual. Some early Gordonian’s pressure lead to a penalty opportunity. Graeme Crawford stepped up, continuing his rich vein of kicking form, putting the penalty over for the first three points of the day.
Form the restart Haddington tried to get on the front foot with their players running hard lines at the Gordonian’s defence. Never one to have a dull sparkle, mainly due to the excessive amount of pre-workout he took prior to the game, Corey Buchan’s enthusiasm got the better of him and he illegally dived over the ruck in an attempt to turn the ball over. Thankfully for Corey, the penalty kick was well wide of the mark and he was off the hook.
For the next 30 minutes it was a test of the defences with neither team creating any clear cut opportunities. With no way through the Gordonian’s defence, due to the brick wall that was Will Vernon and Euan Adam, Haddington turned to their kicking game, trying to use every inch of the uniquely shaped pitch to their advantage.
Tristan Jones got the home crowd cheering by managing to nutmeg himself attempting to field a Haddington clearing kick. Haddington promptly capitalised on the error and hacked the ball up field, Daniel Osugo was first to the ball with Euan Adam there to support and the Gordonian’s defence scrambled to clear their lines.
The second half got underway and replicated the first with an early Gordonian’s penalty. Once again Crawford made the kick look effortless and three more points were added. With Haddington finding no way through a resolute Gordonian’s defence, the north east team were spending more and more time in the Haddington half. The Gordonian’s pressure finally told with Euan Adam scoring the first, and only try, of the game. A further two points was added by Crawford.
With a bit of breathing space Gordonian’s started to take a few risks and look to offload the ball more. Never one to need an excuse, Jamie Christine pulled out one of his trade mark ‘Sonny Bill’ offloads to send Craig McEwan away down the touch line. More Gordonian’s pressure led to another penalty, Crawford duly punished Haddington with another three points.
With the game entering the final stages Haddington were pushing to finish on a high. Wave after wave of attack were pushed back by Gordonian’s. With the away team camped on their own try line Haddington thought they had scored, the referee was unsighted and with the pile of bodies on top of the ball he could not give the try.
