1st XV Defeated in Physical Orkney Encounter
By Daryll Morrow
Gordonians set off on Friday evening for Orkney, an over-night stop in John O’Groats and some of Krusty’s grubby spicy pizza was needed to ensure the boys were fresh for the league deciding match the following day.
Despite having several call offs from regular players, Gogos sent up the strongest team to Orkney that we’ve seen in a while. The first 15 minutes was an extremely physical battle and the Gogos forwards managed to dominate with a quick rumbling maul controlled by Tom Williams who went over for the try.
However, the brute force of our opposition had the better of us and our weaknesses started to show. Orkney then managed to find a mismatch in the Gordonians defence with a two man overlap, Daryll Morrow wrapped himself around the defender in a desperate act to hold the ball up but was given a yellow card for a high tackle and sent off, Gordonians down to 14 men and a try given.
Little mistakes and penalties are what let the team down throughout the game and allowed Orkney to play their style of rugby. However, glimpses of brilliance did show within our defensive efforts and eventually our attacking play in the last 15 minutes which saw Danny Osugo finishing in the left corner. An extremely tough game between top of the table rivals but I think all will agree that Orkney deserved the win.
The Gogo’s will now regroup and re-evaluate their performance going ahead into the last batch of games of the season. Wins in the next 5 games means that we still have a chance at the league title. The point’s game continues.
Special mention must go to Josh Scott with a strong performance on his first start and away game, and also to Gaven Begg who was called up last minute and drove all the way to John O’Groats to catch the ferry over on Saturday morning. A double trouble MOTM and DOTD for Daryll Morrow who ate his pints in true Gogos fashion.
Final Score 32-10
