Gordonians Retain Mike McNaughton Trophy
by Chris Simpson
Saturday’s game began with both sides lined up on the 5 meter line having a minutes applause with the crowd for this testimonial and league game match.
The game started off strong for the Gogos who come close to scoring after going through a good number of phases but ended with Mills slotting a plenty from in front of the posts. The next 10 minutes saw Strathmore keeping the Gogos deep in their own 22 keeping them out from a try but conceding a penalty allowing Strathmore to level the score at 3-3.
After some strong motivational chat from D Oh, the Gogos came back hard with some good phase play and a few cheeky kicks in behind. It wasn’t long before Imrie found himself at the bottom of a ruck on the Strathmore try line where he placed the ball down scoring Gordonians first try. Shortly after, Jack saw the end of his game after injuring his shoulder with Krusty coming on, where the ref made a horrific decision to yellow card him 5 mins after coming on for a what must have been 100% total legit tackle on a Strathmore player.
Half time then came with the score at 3-8 to the 14 man Gordonians side.
With only 14 men Gordonians still came out on smashing it at the start of the second half with the Gogos next top model D Oh making the standard run around the Strathmore winger leaving him and the full back behind to score try number 2. Mills made the conversion taking the score to 3-15.
A scrappy 20 minute followed with both side giving away a few penalties but after a few chances coming Gordonians way the Eel was fed and scored the 3rd try which all but secured a win for the blue and gold.
With 10 minutes left Tom Kenison found himself taking a yellow card for the teams penalty count. This gave Strathmore a good opportunity which they took to score a try before the end bringing the final score to 22-10.
