Jolly Boys vs Kinloss Eagles - Match Report
The Jolly Boys suffer a heavy defeat in their first match of 2013.
After several drop-outs on the Friday and a further change to the team on Saturday morning, a patched up Jolly Boys team took to the field on a sunny afternoon to face the visiting Kinloss Eagles.
After conceding an early penatly, Kinloss scored an early try - exactly what the Jolly Boys had been hoping to avoid against the strongest side in the league. However, this provided a wake up call, with the next 5-10 minutes all played within Kinloss' half and 22. Despite good aggression and some good play in the backs, the Jolly Boys could not get over for a try of their own though settled for 3 points from teh boot of Ally Gill. Again, the Jolly Boys got straight up into Kinloss's 22 though indiscipline in a ruck allowed Kinloss to clear down field and score a second try.
Despite several line breaks by Daryll Morrow and Stuart Easton in the rapid Jolly Boys back division, Kinloss then dominated the rest of the first half, with a lack of organisation in the Jolly Boys and some great skill and running from Kinloss' Fijian fullback allowing easy scores.
With the game effectively gone by half-time, the aim was to be competitive in the second half as the opportunity for tries had been there in the first.
In the second half, the Jolly Boys upped their game and again put Kinloss under pressure. Despite conceding in the second half, the Jolly Boys had several chances of their own after breaks by the back line, the forwards rumbling in close, and also substitute scrum half Duncan Milne sniping and being held up over the Kinloss line.
Finally a long overdue Jolly Boys try came 5 minutes from time, with Eric Edgar burning the Kinloss winger on his outside to score. Ally Gill missed the conversion and the chance to at least put the Jolly Boys into double figures.
Full time - Jolly Boys 8 - 42 Kinloss Eagles
Despite the comfortable scoreline in Kinloss's favour, there were several positives to take from the game for the Jolly Boys and it was felt that only 1 try was not a fair return for the effort put in and opportunities created. The spirit and workrate shown for most of the second half in particular was a big positive to take forward. However, all credit to Kinloss for being very efficient and effective in taking all their chances.
We wish Kinloss all the best for the rest of their league and cup campaigns this season.
