On their return to action after the international break, the Jolly Boys secured a bonus point victory against bottom side Inverness Craig Dunain.

Although it was a sunny winters day in Inverness the week’s rain had resulted in a very wet and muddy pitch, meaning the opening 20 minutes were very scrappy. The Jolly Boys always looked most likely to score first, the Jolly Boys superior wide attacking play resulting in several early breaks, particularly on the left hand side through Aidan Train and Eric Edgar, though ICD covered well. Eventually though, the Jolly Boys attacking play began to reap rewards, with Eric Edgar dodging the covering winger just inside the left touch line and running in a simple finish. Winger Ally Gill missed the conversion for the Jolly Boys to lead 0-5.

With more and more passes beginning to stick for the Jolly Boys, the team as a whole continued to probe with breaks from forwards and backs, though a lack of direct running at times prevented any real scoring chances. However, with the ball going wide against a narrow ICD defence, Aidan Train was left in plenty space to run in a second try, Ally Gill scoring the conversion to take the score to 0-12. From the restart, scrappy play by the Jolly Boys gave a chance for ICD to kick for the posts on the stroke of half time. Iain “the silent assassin” McFarlane took out receiver Ciaran Marshall to gift an attacking scrum to ICD on the edge of the 22 and a needless penalty allowed the opportunity of the penalty. With the attempt missed the Jolly Boys still led by 12 at the break.

The break allowed the Jolly Boys to calm themselves down again and the referee to recover from the fast tempo game that the Jolly Boys were playing, albeit losing his lunch in the process. The Jolly Boys penalty count dried up, though ICD were now playing to play to their strengths by keeping the ball in their larger pack and making ground on the Jolly Boys. With the Jolly Boys defending on their line, ICD were awarded a controversial try when their hooker attempted to crash over. Ciaran Marshall wrapped up the ball and put himself between the ball and the ground, though the try was given leaving the Jolly Boys reeling. The conversion was missed taking the score to 5-12.

Despite the setback, the team responded perfectly, with another wide break allowing Stuart Easton to score in the corner, Ally Gill scoring the conversion to take the Jolly Boys to a 14 point lead with the bonus point try in sight. The Jolly Boys continued to dominate regularly making ground, most notably when Gordon Wood chased and caught a Jolly Boys Garryowen with a mid-air hand off on a would-be tackler, though the team struggled to score the fourth try required. However, it finally came in spectacular fashion, scrum-half Chris Simpson taking a quick tap and go from a penalty and running in the try from around half way, handing off the entire 22 man ICD squad, their coaching team and their supporters on his way to scoring under the posts. The conversion took the score to 5-26 with around 10 minutes left, effectively securing the win in the process.

To their credit, Inverness continued in a determined fashion to get on the scoreboard once more: with the Jolly Boys giving away a couple of cheap penalties ICD tapped every time. Finally an ICD prop broke the Jolly Boys defensive line on 80 minutes, and despite a 15 man charge the ICD kicker landed his first points of the day on the full time whistle.
