The Jolly Boys met Mackie RFC 2nd XV in a 2nd v 3rd place encounter after last week’s positive showing against Deeside.

The Jolly Boys got off to the perfect start, with the ball going wide and Baptiste Gougeon the extra man on the outside finishing the move well by running in under the posts, providing an easy conversion for Craig Murray; 7-0 to the Jolly Boys. The Jolly Boys were dominant, turning over Mackie once again and heading into their 22. A penalty resulted, Craig Murray slotting it for the Jolly Boys to lead 10-0.

Errors then began to creep in, eventual winner of dick of the day Ally Gill handling in the ruck in the most obvious way possible gifting Mackie 3 points. Mackie then forced their way down towards the Gordonians 22, solid defence keeping them away from the try line though eventually conceding another kickable penalty for another infringement in a ruck, Mackie reducing the Jolly boys lead to 10-6.

The rest of the half proved scrappy, Mackie holding out as the Jolly Boys pressured towards the end of the half but no points resulted.

HT Jolly Boys 10 – 6 Mackie RFC 2nd XV

In the second half, the quality of the game dropped away hugely, several handling and other basic errors by both sides making the game very disjointed. There seemed to be a lack of concentration amongst several Jolly Boys players, summed up by prop Calum Hepburn screaming “big RGU scrum” and looking like he was about to hit hard despite the fact scrums had been uncompetitive for over half an hour by that stage, and basic errors such as players not diving on loose balls. Although comfortably defending when Mackie had the ball, due to a high error count the Jolly Boys played most of the second half around their own 22 with the ball dropped in all but two attacks, both of which to Mackie’s credit saw determined defending stop two tries right on the line.

Mackie then finally gained the lead, former Gordonian Mark Coull fending off a Ciaran Marshall tackle as the ball went wide and Mackie’s outside centre crashing through in the corner, the conversion from out wide perfect for Mackie to lead 13-6. A further penalty after James Elderfield started sprinting up the field too early to chase a 22 drop out increased Mackie’s lead to 6 points.

To the Jolly Boys credit, the belief was strong until the very last play that a try could be scored to attempt to snatch the win given the ground the team had made when passes had stuck. However, a dropped ball was once again the downfall, ending the game for Mackie to win.

FT Jolly Boys 10 – 16 Mackie RFC 2nd XV

This was a very disappointing game for the Jolly Boys to lose, with the team’s own errors heavily contributing to the loss in what was a very winnable game. Hopefully this result provides a wake-up call and these errors will be rectified away to Aberdeen Wanderers 2nd XV this weekend so the Jolly Boys can start to climb the league once again.
