Misfiring Gordonians do enough to see off stuffy Highlanders
Home side fail to click but come away with maximum points
After last week’s rout against Orkney, Gordonians were determined to put together a full 80 minutes of rugby. Very few games this season have seen the side fire on all cylinders for the entire game. Coach Richie Anderson emphasising all week the importance of putting in a strong shift to build momentum into the league break for the Autumn Internationals before the return match at the all champions elect Aberdeenshire.
With conditions perfect for a fast game of rugby and the ‘Carpet’ at Countesswells once again ideal for an expansive game which the home side craved. However as the opening 20 minutes proved the game was not going to be allowed to flow like that. In an opening period of knock ons and penalties the Gordonians back line was already beginning to threaten the Highland resources however to their credit the last gasp cover defence and commitment from the away side was of the highest order through the whole game. With the game being bogged down in the forwards and the home sides poor discipline it was up to Ron ‘Streetfighter’ Evans to start the first game of handbags of the day on the ground, further compounded by a voice from the side-lines having the home side marched back down towards their line.
On the half hour mark, a break from AnGus Willis followed by a patient build up allowed stand-off Will Fairlie to slither through the stretched Highland defence to score the first try, in a real turn up for the books he then converted his own try, Mark ‘TobleroneToes’ Marchbank was seen taking notes for the next time he steps up. Moments later from a line out on their own 22 Gus Willis crashed through the middle of the Highland defence before offloading to Peter Johnston to coast in from the half way line, Fairlie adding the extras.
H/T Gordonian RFC 14 – 0 Highland RFC
The second half started with substitute Michael McLaren leaping like a salmon to grab the restart before stretching his legs down the pitch leaving defenders flapping at his long limbs before being halted metres short of the line. After a few phases it was left to Ron Evans to go over for his 2nd try of the season making amends for his first half misdemeanour, with Fairlie adding the extras. With the score at 21 – 0 the game moved into a state of set-piece boredom for the next 20minutes with neither team able to stop the whistle blowing. Highland were next to strike with a hard earned score. Gordonians finally wrapped up the bonus point with Sandy 'Rango' Willis popping up on the right to provide the extra man to go over. Further scores for Patrick Gray & Sandy 'Rango' Willis and a consolation score at the death for Highland left the final score at 36 -12 to Gordonians.
An indifferent performance from the home side in a game which they should have really put to bed in the first half, however they will need to up their game substantially if they are to upset league leaders Aberdeenshire at Woodside in their next encounter. Massive credit to a Highland team who at home are very strong but are struggling to get commitment from players to travel, with this kind of showing they will be sure to pick up that elusive away victory at some point this season.
